08/09/08 Blarney 6-11 Aghabullogue 2-07
Despite a determined performance from the Aghabullogue U16 Hurlers, they had to settle for second place in the Mid Cork A Hurling final, in a game played in wet conditions in Cloughduv on September 8th 2008. Blarney started the scoring with an almost immediate goal but this was quickly cancelled out by a rocket of a goal from Aghabullogue’s full forward John Corkery. Blarney put a number of points on the scoreboard, but Aghabullogue boy’s – Pat Walsh, John Corkery and Michael Dennehy replied with a point each, leaving Aghabullogue well in contention at half time. The half time whistle saw Blarney having a 2 point advantage, with the scoreboard reading 1-05 to 1-03 in favour of Blarney.
Blarney opened the scoring in the second half with a point, but then Aghabullogue’s Mark O’Flynn responded with a bullet of a shot from the penalty spot, resulting in a well deserved Aghabullogue goal. Despite Aghabullogue’s best efforts, Blarney found it easier to put scores on the scoreboard. Aghabullogue’s Michael Dennehy added three further points from well taken frees and Shane Dineen added a point from play, but this was not enough to overcome a physically stronger Blarney side.
Despite losing this game, the Aghabullogue boys still advance to represent Mid Cork in the County A Hurling competition. This in itself is a great achievement and hopefully their determination, skill levels and commitment will allow them to advance through the competition. Great credit is due to all involved, a lot of work has been put in by both players and trainers over the past few months and we now wish them every success in the County A competition.
